“The horse is ready, are you ready?”. Saratoga Springs, New York is a small city with a population roughly 27,000. Every summer, the city hosts the well-known horse race for one month. The city’s population is surged. Saratoga Race Course is the thoroughbred horse racing track which has a capacity of 50,000. It was initially opened in 1863.

BCPA had a group of 11 people to come for the August 19-20 weekend event. Once arriving in the city, we tasted the natural spring water at a park. The nature spring water contains mineral and is abundant here. On Saturday evening, we had a shooting meet at Empire State Plaza in Albany. Here, as planned, we met our fellow photographers from Chinese Community Center of Capital District of New York and had great time with them.

Sunrise time at Oklahoma Training Track was 6:05AM on August 20 Sunday. Our group already arrived half hour earlier in the morning. It was still dark, but the track field showed lots of action. Jockeys and trainers rode horses on the track circling around to practice. Horses need good warm-up before the big race. The sun gradually rose above the horizon, shining through the clouds. The training track was covered a layer of gold color. The sun ray shined on the faces of riders and horses, just fantastic.

The Sunday race started at one o’clock in the afternoon. The grandstand was packed with spectators. People dressed in a beautiful summer fashion. Guys looked handsome and gals looked pretty. After the National Anthem was sung, the race began. There are three types of races performed at Saratoga Race Course: main track (9-furlong or 1 1/8-mile), turf track (8-furlong or 1-mile) and inner turf track (7-furlong). We enjoyed them all but especially the main track race since our cameras could get closer to the horse and riders. Once the starting gate opened, 10 horses jumped into the track and ran. All eyes were on the horses. Dirt arouse from the ground surface, which made the race more intense. Long-focus lens are good to take this type of motion images. The images are shown one subject: speed. Panning shooting was a good approach used by us.

When departing from the race track, we were reluctant to leave. “Did I take good shots on the race?” Everyone seemed to ask themselves utterly. Don’t worry, we will come back again if you didn’t. “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

Some people may watch a movie called Seabiscuit (2003). It is based on a true story. During the Great Depression era, three men came together to train a horse named Seabiscuit to race. Seabiscuit’s unexpected successes made him a hugely popular media sensation. At the end of the movie, Red Pollard said “You know, everyone thinks that we found this broken down horse and fixed him, but we didn’t. He fixed us. Every one of us. And I guess in a way, we kinda fixed each other, too.”

Below are some photos taken by our members during the event.
