BCPA 2017 Annual Meeting

PhotographerCary Chu
Date: Dec 16
th, 2017
Reporter: Nancy Chen

We always say time flies. It is so true, especially for BCPA members with busy photographing schedules throughout the year in 2017.

Dec 16, 2017, it is a cold winter Saturday just like any other regular winter day at New England. Well it is a big day for BCPA. The members came together from all different towns meeting at Quincy. Once again, BCPA’s old friend and long-term sponsor, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care offered their conference room for BCPA to hold the 2017 Annual Meeting.

After taking a light and warm breakfast provided by Harvard Pilgrim (thanks to their sweet arrangement!), the current president of BCPA, Feng Chai started the meeting by announcing results of the “Happiness” photo contest. The contest was co-organized by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and BCPA back to October 2017.

Members actively submitted their pictures for the contest. After judges’ careful review and selection, nine winners received awards of various categories. Rose Hom, the Relationship Manager from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care presented the prizes.

(Rose Hom, Feng Chai, Jingwei Zhang and Daryl Luk with all winners)

What is happiness? Where and how do you find happiness? Do you ever ask these questions to yourself? I guess everyone would have different answers. Each winner uses their picture to illustrate their understanding of Happiness in their own ways, such as gorgeous landscape, happy moments between the grandma and the grandson, or emotional interaction between people and animal, etc.

The winner impressed everyone most is Yun Thwaits (Yun Xia), who just joined the BCPA earlier this year. Yun is capable of capturing something different and unique in the portraits taken with a cell phone. It’s not surprising that Yun received two awards from the Happiness contest, the 1st place of the Most Popular Picture as well as the 1st place of the Most Creative Picture. Well done, Yun Xia! We all are so proud of you!

(Yun Thwaits received two awards)

Surprisingly, we got a guest member showing up at the Annual Meeting. Yun Li, came all the way from New York State to receive her award, the 1st place of the Best Story Telling Picture. Not to mention she was even not a BCPA member yet. We appreciated Yun’s participation and being present at the Annual Meeting. Without any hesitation, she joined the BCPA membership right away in spite of her living so far away from MA. Welcome to the family, Yun Li!

(Yun Li receiving an award)

Afterward, as a tradition at the Annual Meeting, Cary Chu, the volunteered photographer at the Annual Meeting took a few nice pictures for the big BCPA family.

Save the best for the last, finally two Presidents gave speeches respectively.

The current President, Feng Chai summarized what BCPA have achieved in 2017. BCPA family grew so fast in the year of 2017 with more than 50 new members joining the family. With Feng Chai’s great leadership plus the strong commitments and dedication made by key Executive Members of BCPA, so many interesting photography seminars, workshops and photography outings were organized in the year. In addition, Feng Chai shared a list of members who made donation to BCPA either from their companies, or on their own. We all gave a big round of applause to all of them for their commitment, dedication and contribution.

The new President, Dongxu Shan firstly wrapped up what the current service committee has done in 2017 with sincere appreciation to them on all members’ behalf. Then Dongxu made a wonderful presentation about the detailed plan of 2018, including but not limited to various photography workshops, photography outing at least once a month, rerun the “365: one picture a day” project, quarterly Photography with Themes project, etc. Meanwhile, Dongxu announced the new team of volunteers to serve BCPA in 2018.

(Dongxu Shan presented a reward to Feng Chai for her excellent service as BCPA’s President in 2017)

I like the slogan that Dongxu used at the beginning of his presentation, which I believe is an operating strategy that BCPA followed and maintained from Day 1 – Carrying Forward the Tradition, Developing and Growing, Giving back to the Community

Fun part of the meeting started when the raffle kicked off. A few of Executive Members kindly donated their personal photography equipment to support the raffle event.

(Feng Chai & Jingwei Zhang conducting the raffle event)

With that going on, Lei Tian made a detailed presentation to share his unique experience of Burning Man Festival. This summer Lei Tian took an eight-day trip at the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, witnessing a complete process of creating and destroying a non-existing city in the desert.

Obviously Lei Tian spent quite a lot of time preparing the presentation. He explained the history of the Burning Man Festival, logistic planning of the trip, Do’s and Don’ts during the trip, etc. Lei Tian’s vivid introduction generated quite a lot of members’ strong interest.

(Lei Tian sharing his fun stories at the Burning Man Festival)

Yes, time does fly. A half day meeting definitely is not long enough for us to talk about everything happened in 2017 and what is going to happen in 2018.

Looking back, BCPA had a wonderful year with everyone’s passion and support. Looking forward, no doubt it will be another brilliant year for BCPA in 2018!

BCPA 2017 Bald Eagle Photowalk, Maryland

Photographer:David Deng/Atlanta
Date: Nov 9th-12th, 2017
Reporter: Dongxu Shan

Bald eagle as the national bird and national animal of the United States, is a favorite subject of photographers. The members of BCPA have been travelling to the Conowingo dam, Maryland to photograph bald eagles for many years. Nov. 9th to 12th, 2017, twenty plus BCPA members traveled together to Conowingo dam again to capture the beauty of this nature wonder, organized by BCPA.

Despite the long drive, all the teams woke up very early in the mornings and prepared ready along the bank of downstream of Conowingo dam when the sky was still dark. The weather of that weekend was very cold, but the attractiveness of bald eagle fishing chased away the freezing cold in the morning from BCPA members.

When sunlight broke the east horizon, the birds started hunting for food. The BCPA members joined hundreds photographers from all over the world starting to concentrate on eagle chasing. This was a challenging job. Though the eagles were not always fishing and there was a lot of waiting time, the unpredictable appearance of the fishing eagles and their swift actions didn’t allow anyone being distracted, or you would be regret of turning your mind away from the sky. From dawn to dusk, standing in the chilly winter weather for full day, only those bald eagle chasers knew where the fun was.

Even for lunch, no one wanted to leave the site where a wonderful scene could appear at any given moment. All the teams were very well prepared, thanks to the tips from seasoned members in the team. Having warm lunch and dinner were more than needed, after standing in freezing wind for several hours.

You may ask, “Several hundred miles away from home, more than 20 hours standing in freezing weather, did all worth it?”

When the members opened what they captured on their computer screen, I was sure their answer would be “Yes!”.

The following is a small selection of member’s eagle pictures from the trip this year, what would keep them and others coming back to Conowingo dam in coming years:

Staying at the center of New England, the beautiful fall foliage is nature’s gift to BCPA members. As a tradition, BCPA organized 2017 foliage photowalk in Vermont October 6th to 7th. It is a most popular photowalk of BCBA, totally more than 40 photographers participated.

(Feng Chai/BCPA)

The lead organizer Guozhong Li had detailed route and accommodation planning. Due to the large size of the participants, the entire group was divided into 3 action teams, Eagle Team, Rum Team and Dinner Gone team and each team had 3-4 cars. The provided members had flexibility in planning and agility in action. The team was organized with the mix of experienced and less experienced photographers. Each team member not only had opportunity to learn/exchange in large group session, also had unique/personalized experience in their individual group activities.

After the photowalk, each team also summarized their individual route and photo spots into documents to share with BCPA members and general public, for their convenience to prepare trips to Vermont in coming years

BCPA’s Trip to Saratoga Race Course

BCPA’s Trip to Saratoga Race Course
Date: August 19 – 20, 2017
Reporter: John Zhuang (庄鹏)

“The horse is ready, are you ready?”. Saratoga Springs, New York is a small city with a population roughly 27,000. Every summer, the city hosts the well-known horse race for one month. The city’s population is surged. Saratoga Race Course is the thoroughbred horse racing track which has a capacity of 50,000. It was initially opened in 1863.

BCPA had a group of 11 people to come for the August 19-20 weekend event. Once arriving in the city, we tasted the natural spring water at a park. The nature spring water contains mineral and is abundant here. On Saturday evening, we had a shooting meet at Empire State Plaza in Albany. Here, as planned, we met our fellow photographers from Chinese Community Center of Capital District of New York and had great time with them.

Sunrise time at Oklahoma Training Track was 6:05AM on August 20 Sunday. Our group already arrived half hour earlier in the morning. It was still dark, but the track field showed lots of action. Jockeys and trainers rode horses on the track circling around to practice. Horses need good warm-up before the big race. The sun gradually rose above the horizon, shining through the clouds. The training track was covered a layer of gold color. The sun ray shined on the faces of riders and horses, just fantastic.

The Sunday race started at one o’clock in the afternoon. The grandstand was packed with spectators. People dressed in a beautiful summer fashion. Guys looked handsome and gals looked pretty. After the National Anthem was sung, the race began. There are three types of races performed at Saratoga Race Course: main track (9-furlong or 1 1/8-mile), turf track (8-furlong or 1-mile) and inner turf track (7-furlong). We enjoyed them all but especially the main track race since our cameras could get closer to the horse and riders. Once the starting gate opened, 10 horses jumped into the track and ran. All eyes were on the horses. Dirt arouse from the ground surface, which made the race more intense. Long-focus lens are good to take this type of motion images. The images are shown one subject: speed. Panning shooting was a good approach used by us.

When departing from the race track, we were reluctant to leave. “Did I take good shots on the race?” Everyone seemed to ask themselves utterly. Don’t worry, we will come back again if you didn’t. “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

Some people may watch a movie called Seabiscuit (2003). It is based on a true story. During the Great Depression era, three men came together to train a horse named Seabiscuit to race. Seabiscuit’s unexpected successes made him a hugely popular media sensation. At the end of the movie, Red Pollard said “You know, everyone thinks that we found this broken down horse and fixed him, but we didn’t. He fixed us. Every one of us. And I guess in a way, we kinda fixed each other, too.”

Below are some photos taken by our members during the event.

BCPA’s Meetup at Boston Public Library

Meetup BPL
Photographer: Cary Chu (朱健雄)

At New England, summer time is always an active season for photographers, same here at BCPA. Right after BCPA’s polo match shooting event on Aug 6, one of our members Cary Chu (朱健雄) brought us an very exciting news – BCPA got a permission from the Boston Public Library (BPL) that we (maximum 15 members) were allowed to bring cameras into the BPL building to shoot for three hours on Aug 13 2017, Sunday afternoon. With such a special permission, we were allowed to bring in tripods and were able to shoot together in a larger group.

Established in 1848, BPL was the first large free municipal library in the United States. There are two major buildings at BPL – the McKim Building and the Johnson Building. In 1986, the National Park Service designated the McKim Building a National Historic Landmark citing it as “the first outstanding example of Renaissance Beaux-Arts Classicism in America. Since then, BPL has become one of must see places at Boston.

Following a “First Come First Serve” principle, eventually a group of 15 BCPA members got this great opportunity. There were experienced members as well as some beginners, a perfect combination! To be well prepared for the event, a few days before the event, group members started talking about different shooting ideas. Daryl Luk (陆德礼) asked for volunteers to be his models, he even made sketches to show his designs for each model. Out of his busy daily routines, Cary Chu (朱健雄) took his time making useful tips for beginners demonstrated with nice pictures he took at BPL in old days.

On Aug 13 2017, outside of BPL people enjoyed the breeze under a sunny day; inside of BPL, 15 BCPA members were so into their shooting activities. They scattered into all rooms of the two buildings. Everyone was taking pictures with different lenses from various angles.

Below are some photos taken by our members at BPL. Through these pictures, hope you would see a bit different perspectives of the BPL. Enjoy!

BCPA’s Meetup at Myopia Polo Field

BCPA’s Meetup at Myopia Polo Field
Date: August 6, 2017
Reporter: Feng Chai (柴锋)

mingwei group_1024Photographer: Mingwei Li (李明伟)

On August 6, 2017, BCPA had a photography meetup at 435 Bay Road, South Hamilton, MA to shoot polo match. The match was played at Myopia Polo Club, which is the oldest active polo field in the country. The match began at 3 pm. Our members started to get together in the field after the gate opened at 1:30 pm.

The sky was sunny and clear with a few white soft clouds floating across it. It was not too hot nor too cold. It was perfect for outdoor activities.

There were more than 20 BCPA members attended the event. Many of them have never shot (nor even seen) a polo match before. Everybody got very excited about the opportunity and equipped themselves with fast cameras and telephoto lenses.

At the end, we all enjoyed the meetup event, and a beautiful sunny afternoon.

Here are some photos taken by our members during the event.
